WWF: A Hunt For Marine Treasure in the Philippines

The Philippines

A hunt for marine treasure

This tale is fraught with sharks and treasure, pirates and poachers, with strife and solutions.
Surrounded by marine life 65 feet below the eastern face of Apo Isle in the Philippines’ Occidental Mindoro, I am on a quest to find the true ‘jewels’ of the deep. Not real jewels, of course – but whatever makes this area unique.
An impossibly huge school of yellow-dashed fusilier (Pterocaesio randalli) appears from beneath. I try to estimate their number but simply cannot – they coalesce into a single mass that fills my field of vision. In a moment, they are gone, and I am left looking down into the blue.

Source of Life and Legend

Apo Reef lies at the northern tip of the Coral Triangle, a 5.7 million square-kilometer region that spans the seas of six countries: the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste. The Coral Triangle is home to a quarter of the world’s islands and at least 500 species of reef-building coral.
Like the Bermuda Triangle, the area has also spawned a folkloric menagerie. Enchanting mermaids, wailing sirens, ship-tearing kraken and all manner of sea monsters featured in the tales of Age of Sail pirates and privateers.
In actuality, the region is an enormous undersea food factory, whose produce directly benefits half a billion people each year. A single square kilometre of healthy reef can produce over 30 metric tonnes of grouper, oyster, tuna and other forms of seafood annually. The potential of our seas to sustain life is vast, but fragile.

Paradise Assailed
Today, paradise lies troubled. For over a century, coastal development, destructive fishing practices, coral mining, sedimentation, overfishing and chemical pollution have chipped away at the ocean’s health. Add to that climate change consequences such as ocean warming, acidification and coral bleaching, and we have an undersea war against marine resources. Faced with this problem, many countries within the Coral Triangle have established Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), to conserve what’s left.
Today the Philippines hosts about 10 per cent of the world’s MPAs – over 1,000. Established largely through local government initiatives and maintained through the blood, sweat and tears of coastal communities, these undersea enclaves are scattered throughout the archipelago to provide safe havens for marine life, as well as enticing destinations for a growing number of eco-conscious tourists.
Sadly, many MPAs are plagued by a lack of funding. Mismanagement is rife, and it is estimated that little over 100 MPAs are properly administered. The rest are dubbed ‘paper parks’ – protected in name only. Since the 1990s, WWF has worked with partners to advance scientific research, policy reform and protected area management in the Coral Triangle. Our Philippine office has pioneered the establishment and upkeep of MPAs in some of the country’s best-known and most productive coral reefs.
Two of the country’s jewels are Apo Reef and the Tubbataha Reefs off the Sulu Sea.

A Pearl of the Pacific

Hailed as the Jewel of Mindoro and a former world-class dive site, 30 years of destructive fishing has left much of Apo Reef in an abysmal state. In October 2007, WWF and the local government spearheaded the total closure of Apo Reef – the country’s largest at 34 square-kilometers – for fishing. What followed were alternative income programmes and a robust ecotourism drive designed to keep livelihoods afloat while allowing the reef time to recover.
Giant fish aggregation devices, locally termed payaw, were installed to provide alternate fishing spots for coastal communities. The crude but effective contraptions feature a buoy, counterweight and anywhere from 10 to 20 giant coconut fronds. Algae growth on the decomposing fronds attracts herbivores such as surgeonfish and rabbitfish, which then draw in larger predators.
Fisherman Elmo Bijona testifies to the effectiveness of the devices, “A single payaw can daily yield maybe 15 kilogrammes of good fish per boat. You can land mackerel, skipjack tuna and even yellowfin tuna on any given night.” The steady rise in the size and number of fish has been matched by an upsurge of tourists to the recovering reef, proving that ecological stewardship can go hand in hand with profit.
Even more dramatic results are evident in other model sites. From 2004 to 2005, the world-renowned Tubbataha Reefs off Palawan doubled the yearly catch per square kilometre – a yield seven times more productive than a typical reef. Of course, there are no fences around MPAs, so the fish that spawn and grow on Tubbataha’s fertile reefs may end up feeding a family in an entirely different region.
Such results don’t come for free. The innovative work on Apo and Tubbataha has been supported by Cebu Pacific passengers who voluntarily offset the ecological impacts of their flights by donating to the upkeep of the reefs.ttps://exposure.imgix.net/production/photos/dh2ovuigl9z40hgg47wx98vjjp2hsi1ulorf/original.JPG?fm=pjpg&auto=format&q=60&nrs=30&dpr=1&w=1265

Finding treasure

Back in Apo Reef, a shadow approaches. Gradually it morphs into a white-tip reef shark (Triaenodon obesus); I tense up and check for my dive knife. Then I notice what attracted the shark, and it’s not me. The fusiliers – thousands upon thousands of them, have returned. The shark dives into the mass.
As I watch the fascinating interplay between predator and prey, I notice, as if for the first time, the fusiliers’ gleaming hues of cobalt, ruby and gold, gloriously illuminated by morning rays.
As with the grandest treasure tales, fortunes really do lie sunken beneath the blue. We must realize that the sea’s greatest treasure is its ability to provide – but that shall only continue when we learn to protect the bounty at hand.ttps://exposure.imgix.net/production/photos/f17l2p40cm7glzotxk8i47ady4e39vwbm8sl/original.jpg?fm=pjpg&auto=format&q=60&nrs=30&dpr=1&w=1265

Seafair 2015 Poker Run

A event like no other will be held on the SeaFair 2015. This is called the "Poker Run" and it will be a challenge for sure. For all you speed enthusiasts out there, here are the Poker Run mechanics and the link to learn more about one of the most awesome events in the Philippines that even brings the water on ground!

Each participant is given a score card which will be filled in as they progress along the route. At each designated stop, the participants draw a card at random. • The winning hand is determined by standard poker hand rankings.

  • Only five cards may be played for best hand.
  • Upon picking card from one location, Participants must present their tally sheet, pick one card at a time, and lay it face up on the table. No duplicate cards can be used. Participants must draw additional card if an identical card is drawn. For example, if you draw the seven of clubs and you already have the seven of clubs on your score-card, then you must put the card back and re-draw another card.
  • It is the participants' responsibility to check their score sheet before leaving each checkpoint, to ensure that the card they drew is correctly recorded on their score sheet.
  • If playing more than one hand, the participant must present the appropriate Poker Hand Tally Sheet to be marked before each card is drawn.

No Cellphone Can Match My #EverythingProof #Speaker

I held my breath as the #EverythingProof speaker was dropped into the water. My jaw dropped as I watch the video. Imagine, the abuse that it went through, as it was being demonstrated like it was in a warzone, just to show how durable it is - waterproof, shockproof, dustproof, and even snowproof, hence it is called #EverythingProof.

I just had to have one! As the top of the line which is the Life Jacket is large for my everyday use, though I want that for my next mountain trek, I got the H2O to bring along wherever I go.

The H2O speaker has the sound coming from the front and the back, giving me that so much needed bass. It's wireless and even if my cell is far away, I still can listen to my music. And, it's a no worry speaker, with the sound quality that I want, as it's made by Altec Lansing, the company that was founded by the one who established JBL.

#EverythingProof For Indoor and Outdoor Use

I bake and cook a lot. I have to wash my hands and some things like pots and pans while doing so. Baking means that there is flour on my hands sometimes, and batter that does splatter. I have a work table and I like to prepare what I will make while listening to music.

And, with the H2O, I can place it in my work space, bring it to the kitchen, and then, and hold it even if my hands are wet or with flour. I don't have to be extra careful, as I just can place it nearly anywhere.

So I bring it to the bathroom of my parents to make it float in the tub, and then, when I was done with my bath, I stepped into the living room, my youngest daughter spotted the H2O.

"Hey, Mom, you have new speakers! May I borrow it?" Hmm... She already has earphones, wireless headphones, and a wireless speaker but since it was a new thing, and for sure she can't break it, I said okay, and she went off to see her friends, and when she got home, she said her friends loved it and dropped it into the pool to see it float!
My daughter, Allison, with the H2O
And, now that my other girls know about the speaker, I am pretty sure that during the next beach trip, one of them will borrow it, so I plan to give them an H2O each, soon.

Disadvantage

I would like to say that there are many advantages to owning an #EverythingProof speaker and would like to point out that the only disadvantage I found is that the cellphone that has the same rugged durability has not yet been made!

For more information about these speakers, visit the Altec Lansing Facebook page.

Comelec Biometrics: Delete the Right To Vote and Senior Citizen Not Priority

Women gained the right to vote. It is something that I have always taken for granted. I know for a fact that I can vote, and that is my constitutional right.

As there are over 3 million people still not registered with the Biometrics, the fact that I could be deleted is looming over my head like a sword. Let's see, how many times before did I have to update my voter's registration? Why did I end up in a different precinct from my parents and we live in the same house?

The Biometrics is a filing system. I do agree that the files have to be fixed. ID were not issued to many. Yet, the treat of being deleted as a voter because there is urgency for the printing of the ballots and other matters does not hold water for me.

It may have been signed into law yet I firmly believe that even new voters should have the right after the cut off which is on October 31. Maybe there is a way for them to register, right?

If millions are still not registered, no way can the mall Biometrics accommodate all.

Another right that has been waved aside is the senior citizen line priority. No more other comment has to be made. Give them the respect and the service that they deserve, as we do honor and prioritize our senior citizens in all facilities and establishments.

There is no solution but an extension yet my statement is, if the filing system is just to be fixed, should I lose my right to vote? If I had to register again, as this Biometrics should do, it is like becoming a new voter. What was the good of my registering when I was 18 when it can be deleted just like that?

I have the right to vote and it is in the constitution. There should be solutions made for the millions for them to do that Biometrics thing.

I dread the lines. Maybe I should have gone earlier? But wait, even on the last day, I should be accommodated, as a government office should extend the hours if ever there is one voter who will lose their right to vote because of the cut off, as long as they are in line before 5pm, they have the right.

In trying to fix files, we can deprive our countrymen of the basic right that we hold dear. Make the changes, as online line up is not honored, and there are seniors who are waiting in line, don't make them not get priority.

Lancris Residences: A Delightful Wine and Dine Night

Having had attended a lot of real estate events, my expectations for the Wine Tasting by Lancris Residences was high. I am glad to note that it was a perfect night and my expectations were surpassed.

About Lancris Residences

Nestled and quiet, Lancris Residences has a wide street going into their condominium area and alert and helpful security. These condominium buildings with units and facilities that are ideal for today's lifestyle, is located in Dominic Savio St. corner Japan St., Don Bosco, Paranaque. Easily accessible, this stylish community 1.3-hectare property is the project of Land Cris Somerset Dev’t Corp.
The Wine Tasting Event

Hosted by Mr. Massimo Cavallon of Il Biancorosso, the highlight of this event was the unveiling of the scale model of the project. The scale model provides a bird's eye view of this master-planned community that will have 4 towers, a clubhouse complex, and a commercial building.

It is pleasant to note that the wine to be tasted coincided with the food to be served. As the various bottles such as white, blush, and red wines were uncorked, the appetizers, salad, roast beef, and other dishes, and desserts were made available. The cheese table was so overwhelmingly delicious, that I could not manage to eat the pasta. The excellent chef went out of his way to prepare me a salad and during the buffet, sliced into bite-size pieces the wonderful roast beef and gave me a heaping side serving of roasted garlic.

The host, Massimo Cavallon, was highly detailed, and we were provided with unlimited wine and a guide to the various "scents" that can be detected. The event venue was cool, comfortable, spacious, and very pretty, as we were serenaded by the classical violin music of the expert Jem Garcia.

The atmosphere was that of relaxation. There was no hard-sell, and instead, all inquiries were ushered into the showroom area, which had a proper reception area and beautifully interior designed units to view. I would love to own a condominium at Lancris Residences as it is a wise investment, as it has the potential to gain real estate value fast, and I surely will be able to rent out the unit unless one of my daughters would like to live there.

Lancris Residences is the legacy project of Land Cris Somerset Development Corporation, sister company of the Duraville Realty and Dev’t. Corp and Durawood Construction and Lumber Supply, Inc. Located inside Better Living Subdivision in Paranaque City, Lancris Residences boasts of its suburban location, spacious units, and amenities designed for the family.

It is marketed by Duraville Marketing Inc. You may contact 0917. 801. 2677 for more information and learn more about their place by accessing their various social media accounts.

#Rivermaya : Norby and Ryan at #Blogapalooza

Having gone to Blogapalooza 2015 early with my youngest daughter, Almond, I was delighted to see that it was a fun while working event. The Business to Blogger 'B2B' wasn't boring and super formal at all. That was a relief as it was a Sunday out with my kid, and turned out to be pleasant time.

The businesses had booths and there was various activities which I will write about in a future post as I just have to write this onenow!

Rivermaya at Blogapalooza

When I looked at the photo booth of JB Music, I noticed a guy sitting on a stool, strumming his guitar quietly, his hair tossed to partially cover his face.  As I approached, the girl of that booth said, "Would you like to have your picture taken with Rivermaya?" I peered, and still could not see the guitar player's face. "Who is that?" I asked.

"That's Norby. And the other one is Ryan. The other members haven't arrived yet."

Oh, I was delighted to here that. Norby! The last time I watched him play was during an acoustic Wednesday night at Checkpoint Rock Bar in BF that my other daughter, Sarah, manages. I still clearly recall his haunting, lingering tune, and remembered that he had so kindly accommodated and sang a song from Sting which was "Message in a Bottle" upon my request.

I moved closer and said, "Norby?". He looked up after I disturbed his concentration, and said, "You're the mom of Sarah! Are you a blogger, too?"

"Yes!" Then we talked for a while as Almond, who works at Swivel Lifestyle Lounge in BF knew the son of Ryan. Then we had our picture taken.
Norby is humble, unassuming, and pleasant. And, Ryan, is also very pleasant and conversational, too, like most #Checkpoint rockers - it's life devoted to making music, enjoying the now, and not delving on issues, that's why I like the rock and surf lifestyle.

Moments

For me, the best part of the Blogapalooza event was meeting new people and seeing friends, and creating bonding moments that makes relationships.
