DOST-ITDI's biodiesel antifreeze to boost foreign sales
With the DOE 2017-2040 Philippine Energy Plan targeting to maintain a B2 biodiesel blending, as shown in its long term (2020-2040) Biofuels Roadmap, local processors are having difficulty finding an antifreeze that would ensure their biodiesel gets a slice of the foreign market.
Cleotilde A. Bulan, head of the Industrial Chemicals Section at the Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI), stressed the need for local processors for a locally-produced antifreeze agent that would complement the Philippine biodiesel from coconut. The biodiesel industry sector needs "this" to ensure that the coconut methyl ester (CME) or coco biodiesel can compete in the world market. GlobeNewsWire has reported that the global biodiesel market is currently standing at the size of USD23,290 million and is expected to reach USD25,880 million by the end of 2026 (CAGR of 1.5% during 2021-2026).
Bulan explains further what antifreeze does. Also known as a coolant, it lowers a liquid's freezing point, which is why it is added to vehicles' radiators. In foreign localities, antifreeze allows cars to operate in a variety of temperatures, from frigidly cold to scorchingly hot.
By adding a mixture of chemicals and water, antifreeze helps ensure that the liquid in radiators does not freeze over during winter or boil up during summer, thus overheating the engine.
But, how does an antifreeze exactly work? How does it protect engines?
Bulan said that the key lies in coolants' boiling and freezing points. Pure water has a boiling point of 212°F (100°C) and a freezing point of 32°F (0°C). However, by using a 50/50 mixture of water and ethylene glycol, the M boiling point rises to 223°F (106°C), and the freezing point lowers to -35°F (-37°C).
By taking it a step further, using a 30/70 mixture of water and ethylene glycol, the boiling point rises to 235°F (113°C), and the freezing point lowers to -67°F (-55°C).
However, Bulan's team is working on a different antifreeze agent -- the synthesis of glycerol (a naturally occurring alcohol) acetals. Here, glycerol acts to prevent freezing damage, such as ice crystal formation.
Foreign research studies show that at lower glycerol concentrations like 10-20%, the frozen stock will be fairly solid at -80°C, while at higher concentrations (30-50%), it may remain partially liquid.
Bulan's team has since applied for a patent for the glycerol acetal and biodiesel samples.

DOST-ITDI develops stabilizer from Okra
The Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) has developed a stabilizer from a new source - okra.
Most stabilizers or natural hydrocolloids come from plant (pectin, carrageenan, cellulose gum, locust bean gum), animal (gelatin), or microbial (xanthan gum, gellan gum) sources.
Hydrocolloids are water-loving and are used as functional ingredients to increase product consistency, improve the gelling effect, and control the microstructure, texture, flavor, and shelf life of food or non-food products.
Oliver C. Evangelista, team leader of the project on sourcing hydrocolloids from okra, said, "local markets have a daily oversupply of okra, including an excess volume of off-specs and material rejects." He added that this excess volume of off-specs makes okra an ideal source of natural hydrocolloid because this new demand will not be competing with current uses for it.
Evangelista is thus encouraging food manufacturers and processors to utilize their okra or other by-products and generate additional income by creating value-added and innovative products.
"Interested parties can visit ITDI to explore the development of new products from their waste materials. Our Modular Multi-Industry Innovation Center or InnoHub sa Pinas is equipped with multi-functional modular equipment that can be retrofitted to suit every manufacturing line," he explained.
Results of several studies on the viscosity or thickness of spray-dried okra fluid have resulted in two new products. These include banaba milk tea and toothpaste with calamansi seed oil.
ITDI has partnered with Greenstar Produce Philippines Inc. to produce these new products. Established in 2007 as a group company of Watari Co., Ltd. in Kanagawa, Greenstar processes fresh okra varieties and exports these to Japan.

Testimony
Sad to say that during our pandemic times, we have limited access to basic health services such as that of dental care. When dental clinic were open, there might be extra fees such as that for PPE to wear and having to take an COVID test.
During a dental visit last year when the health protocols were strict, my regular dentist did not charge me extra for my PPE outfit. The procedures included that of teeth cleaning which became a more lenghty process than before the pandemic for even I did try to use those tiny interdental toothbrushes, I could not as those could not fit the tight gaps between my teeth.
It's a good thing that I recently discovered Cleene Clio which made my oral hygiene routine more efficienct. These toothbrushes are great cleaning tools that do the task of interdental cleaning when those small interdental brushes cannot. It is a great "tool" to use, as aside from the gentle brush that does not make my gums bleed, Cleene Clio for adults also has a tongue cleaner that gets rid of that white stuff (bad bacteria) on the tongue that causes bad breath. I am glad I use Cleene Clio as I was able to maintain the hard-to-obtain dental cleaning and am confident that me and my family use the right toothbrush that suits our needs.

Fatitude Comfort Food Restaurant Review
Served to us, the Wazzup Pilipinas vbloggers, along with our organizer, Wazzup Pilipinas owner, Ross del Rosario, among the several dishes, was a hefty large round glazed slab of meat marinated and cooked with herbs for hours called Porchetta. This meat with crispy sweet skin, is fantastic as with each bite has the richness of flavor from a slow-roast, and the subtle hints of Italian herbs.
It is a delight to discover, as we indulged in the various dishes that the food of Fatitude was true to form, meets and goes beyond expectations.
Fatitude menu include Mexican dishes like Chimichanga, and Filipino food that are also ideal for consuming while drinking such as Sizzling Lechon Sisig.

MATDEV rolls out new AM services
Inaugurated late last year, the Materials Development Laboratory or MATDEV has started rolling out its additive manufacturing services after its introduction to the public on March 25, 2021.
Riding on the wheels of novelty, MATDEV proposes an energy-efficient and waste-reducing technology. It employs the technology of additive manufacturing (AM), which is how objects are created in 3D printing. It is called additive manufacturing because the build process adds instead of subtracts raw material.
MATDEV also undertakes research and development on materials, such as ceramics, polymers, nanomaterials, and composites for additive manufacturing abled products. It aims to reduce the cost of raw materials by using local resources and increase the effective use of additive manufacturing abled products.
MATDEV is one of two facilities housed under DOST's Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMCen). AMCen is a shared facility between DOST-ITDI and the Metals Industry Research and Development Center (DOST-MIRDC). The second facility inside AMCEN is MIRDC's RAPPID-ADMATEC (Research on Advanced Prototyping for Product Innovation and Development using Additive Manufacturing Technologies).
Learn more about MATDEV and its AM services in DOST-ITDI's TekNegoShow Special Edition, an off-the-cuff online business talk show on technology, which will air narratives and insights of technology generators, business people, and the consuming public on how they perceive a featured technology.
TekNegoShow Special Edition can be viewed through its Facebook account TekNegoShow and Youtube ITDI DOST with a weekly Thursday afternoon (1:30 PM) show date beginning July 8 until August 12 of this year. (AMGuevarra\\ DOST-ITDI S&T Media Service)

Only Pain Relief: Reflections and Refractions
We seek pain relief and avoid that which makes us unhappy. However, we may consume a bowl of oatmeal, even if we dislike it. Our mind is set that it is good for us as we choke it down and when we rush to the toilet, we still tolerate eating oatmeal.
As our mind gets triggered to seek happier situations, such as following our craving for chocolate when we see an advertisement, it also sends out an alarm when we expect to have pain.
Only a crazy is happy all the time.
So we put on a brave front and tolerate the pain, like physical or emotional pain, chocking it down like a bowl of oatmeal.
We delude ourselves that relationships have no pain like the way it is in movies. That those love stories are true to life and real.
Romance is a choice.
The veritable exchange of words, the glances, the actions, are not set by the scene. It is a decision.
Relationships are oatmeal. Not all the time does it have to be toleraged but it can become as boring as oatmeal. It is acceptance.
Our minds are set to avoid pain. Relationships will inflict pain, as said by Gibran, as we might have experienced.
A classic pain-avoiding experience is after owning a dog and the dog dies, is to decide never to have a dog again.
Thank the dog for sharing their life with you. Dog did not want to die. Another dog will love you.
It makes me smile to think that constant companionship with a human being can become intolerable. Humans talk and show things by their actions or lack thereof.
So I have a dog. I also seek pain relief.
Memories can be beautiful but are also unkind. Comparing is not an option because it is unfair. Even actions or efforts should not be compared, though we do, as we base it on experience.
Love is a feeling.
No. It is a decision.
Feelings change. But like a bowl of oatmeal, the feeling of knowing that it is good for you will make you eat oatmeal daily.
Love is pain relief. It is a shelter. For sure, there will be hurting moment coz we are human, and that makes us alive.
Shakespeare was always in love.
Real love is not a book.
As we write down the chapters of our lives, it has those we are bound to as family, as there was a decision, and those we decide to be our friends and to love.
Who writes our book? Not only us.
Happiness is a choice.
From desperate to disgusted, from obsessed to jilted. Love is a scam?
It is the precedent.
Love is a feeling. "I love you."
Love is a decision. "Always."
Love is pain tolerated. "It's ok."
Pain relief. "Break up"
Pain relief. "Stay"
Due to the emoticons of our being human, we have feelings.
Pain relief. And when we have no pain, be it emotionally or physically, just keep dancing to the music of life.
