Herbalife Survey Results: Sedentary Lifestyle Risks

Herbalife’s Nutrition At Work Survey Reveals
Majority of Philippines’ Workforce
Lead Largely Sedentary Lifestyles
Putting them at Risk of Obesity

Herbalife Asia-Pacific Wellness Tour seeks to address health issues associated with sedentary lifestyles, and deepen practical understanding on the benefits of a healthy, active life.

PHILIPPINES, April 25, 2016 – Herbalife, a global nutrition company, has released the findings of the new Nutrition At Work Survey, which revealed that the majority of Philippines’ workforce leads largely sedentary lifestyles, putting them at risk of obesity. The Survey1, which was designed to understand the lifestyle habits and attitudes of Asia Pacific’s modern workforce, was conducted in March with 5,500 full-time workers in 11 Asia-Pacific markets, including 500 workers from the Philippines.

According to the survey findings, almost nine out of 10 (85%)workers in the Philippines spend at least six hours a day sitting at their desk, with 52% of its workforce eating lunch at their work desk two to five times per week. The survey also revealed that majority of Philippines’ workforce (86%) exercise less than three times per week, with five out of 10 getting less than 30 minutes of physical activity a day at their workplace. This suggests a significantly worrying trend locally, on the back of rising obesity rates recorded in recent years.

Nevertheless, the risk of obesity could be averted if workers in the Philippines decide to take control over their own nutritional intake and exercise regimen. Close to eight out of 10 workers(75%) affirmed that they strive to live a healthy, active life, however, the majority of them noted that they find it difficult to stay active during workdays.

“With a majority of Philippines’ workforce leading largely sedentary lifestyles, our mission as a global nutrition company is to help people in the Philippines take practical steps towards leading healthy, active lives.By inculcating positive nutrition and active lifestyle habits to people in the Philippines,we hope that this will, over time, help reduce obesity risks and lead to positive improvements to the well-being of our people,”said Mr. Rosalio Valenzuela, General Manager of Herbalife Philippines.

Aimed at addressing health issues associated with sedentary lifestyles, and deepening practical understanding on the benefits of healthy, active lifestyles, Herbalife launched its fifth Asia Pacific Wellness Tour 2016, held in the months of April and May. The latest edition of the Wellness Tour builds upon the successes of the past four tours that welcomed more than 80,000 participants across the region, and features a host of medical symposiums, talks and workshops led by seven experts from Herbalife’s Nutrition Advisory Board (NAB), covering 26 cities across Australia, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macau, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Meeting Mark Zuckerberg and My Facebook Friends Day Experience

Last January 31, 2016, Fellow Filipino Abby Asistio flew to San Francisco and had the wonderful opportunity of being chosen as one of the eighteen invited by Facebook on their 12th Anniversary Friends Day celebration with California-based Alopecia awareness advocate, Rachel Regal. Alopecia is an autoimmune condition which results in partial or total head and body hair loss. Abby Asistio have had it since she was four while Rachel just developed it sometime in 2012, the same year she discovered that her 10-year-old daughter, Eliana, had it, too. Six inspiring stories were picked by Facebook among its 1.64 billion users and Abby’s friends were all amazed when they've found out that Abby’s Alopecia story was one of them. Imagine that!

Abby and Rachel met each other through the double A hand sign campaign that Aby started in 2012, and They've been "connected" since then. Last year, Facebook Stories featured how these two were able to build a friendship, as well as campaign for disease awareness through Facebook! And last February 1st, Abby and Rachel had the chance to tour FB headquarters in Menlo Park, San Francisco, meet and chat with the people behind Facebook (Founder & CEO Mark Zuckerberg, COO Sheryl Sandberg, CPO Chris Cox, and a whole lot of awesome people), get crazy cool gadgets and have one of the best experiences of their lives.

Abby recounted that it was such a surreal feeling to be in the same room as the creator of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg. Mark Z was wearing his trademark look (jeans, sneakers, shirt and a big smile on his face), and had such a friendly, approachable aura and demeanor about him. Not at all intimidating! He shared stories about how the company started, its mission-vision, the ups and downs that come along, and their future plans. Those invited also had the chance to ask him questions. When Mark Z was asked about achieving success and life’s “impossibilities”. He said, “There’s a difference between impossible and things taking a really long time. Even if you’re not going to be able to do something in a short time period, if you care about something, you want to see the world to move into that direction… So the best thing to do is just get started and not be discouraged. It’s tough because this stuff is hard, or else people would’ve already done it.”

Abby Asistio got the chance to ask a question to one of the world’s 50 most powerful, successful women in business, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg. Aside from Alopecia awareness, Abby is also an active Real Beauty advocate with girls and women struggling with various insecurities, being so consumed by the world’s unrealistic and sometimes superficial standards of beauty. So Abby asked Sheryl about her perception of it. Sheryl said that beauty is just like success and that no one could really define it for you. We are all unique. We have different stories, dreams and desires. We should explore our own inner and outer beauty, believe and embrace that we are beautiful, and never allow anyone to tell us otherwise.

Mark capped off his talk by sharing their company philosophy with everyone present. Though already having over 1 billion subscribers, there are still 7 billion people all over the world without access to all the meaningful connections and information that Facebook brings. One thing that the company stands by is that “things are always 1% completed”. It keeps them grounded, reminding them that there is always so much work, growth and progress to be done, and so many people to reach out to and help.

Everything about the Facebook trip was overwhelming and inspiring according to Abby. More than anything, it reminded her about “responsibility”. We are all given our own platforms, in this case “accounts and connections”, to make a dent in this world. It is up to us to become complacent and take these vehicles for granted, or maximize the opportunities and use them to make a positive impact in this generation. Abby is grateful that Facebook has become a medium for her to communicate disease awareness and touch people beyond the confines of her tiny room and her country. Abby is also glad that she and Rachel are two out of millions of people choosing to recognize the importance of social media in contributing to making this world a better place, and actually doing something about it.

Truly, God plans the best adventures and creates the most beautiful surprises. Abby knows that she wouldn't have been handpicked for this if it weren't for Him, as well as the countless individuals who have cared and showed support for my advocacy.Abby would like to leave a positive thought to everyone that we should really take the time to search for and identify our “purpose” – that one unique, very specific calling that is the result of our talents, dreams, desires, passions and experiences. Once you find it, be faithful to it no matter how long or difficult the journey towards its fulfillment may be. You’ll never know where it could lead to, how far it could go and how large it could grow. Abby is also thankful that her campaign continues to spread and reach new heights and she is particularly grateful to Facebook for giving her this opportunity and to Novuhair, Nature's Answer to Hair Loss (www.novuhair.com), for always being so supportive of her advocacy and endeavors. Abby is proud and honored to have represented the Philippines and the Alopecia community in this once-in-a-lifetime, international event.

Verona Optical: Clearer Vision of Excellence

Innovative Verona Optical products provide comfort, durability, and best eye care.
Millions of people need to wear eyeglasses but what are the factors that makes the visible difference when choosing the correct pair of eyeglasses? Some people require eyeglasses for daily use for clearer vision, being far-sighted or near-sighted, some for corrective prescription, and there are the ones who desire eyewear for trendy reasons.

Verona Optical is the home of K-Pop eyeglasses and other Korean products such as contact lenses - and what you can find are a level up from what are in ordinary optical shops. Establish in 1985, there are branches in a few of the most popular malls in Ortigas, Taft, Muntinlupa and Cebu and the one which I visited which was in SM North Edsa. Their main branch is at the heart of the bustling city of Makati.

With hundreds of products in their inventory of eyeglasses for prescription wear and for that trendy look at their SM North Edsa branch, my choice was made a lot easier, eliminating the need of fitting many, as there was the kind of frames to choose from. I looked around and checked out the prices, as of course, as affordability does play a part in choosing eyeglasses. This optical shop does have highly affordable frames that were on a promo sale for only 500 pesos. There were frames that cost 999, up to the ones I chose that cost 5,900 but were on sale at 3,900. There's usually a sale in their store and discount coupons are given out freely even before a purchase.

The frames that I chose are called Ultem, deriving its name from the material it is made from. Certified as eco-friendly by the FDA, this same material is used to make airplanes and medical devices. These frames are astoundingly flexible, solving one of the most common problems of wearing eyeglasses, which is that of it breaking. It is lightweight, and the material itself reduces the irritation that happens to the skin, such as that in the nose area, due to prolonged use of eyewear. This material can handle being subjected to high temperature conditions.
These Ultem frames can take on the abuse that is subjected to with regular use, and when it is subjected to common accidents, like it falling on the floor. The other advantages include the no-nose marks, the no-sweaty bridge, the lightness, the comfort on the nose and where the "arms" stay on top of the ears. It's got the wearability, is trendy, and the durability, making it an excellent investment for clearer vision.

To own a pair of Ultem eyeglasses from Verona Optical that will last for years, without color fading or changing, looking practically as new as the day it was bought - means getting more that what you paid for and maximizes the value of your hard-earned money.

The lenses that I choose were the thinnest ones and these have all sorts of special features such as anti-glare, anti-reflection, and anti-scratch. I noted that night while I was wearing my brand new pair that when I look at a street lamp, there is no rainbow circles around it. The lenses that I got are clear as that is what fits what my daughter says is my new hipster look. Verona Optical has all the kinds of lenses though, to include that of gradual progressive, myopia control, and tinted lenses, in various thickness. Choosing the thinnest lenses makes the eyeglasses the lightest weight possible.

After choosing a few Ultem frames to fit, the assessment was made according to a conservative color that I prefer, as I do like the classic look even if the frames are K-Pop, it was achieved. I did like another frame yet was advised that those were too big for my face, as the eyeglasses part where the lenses are should not extend too much past the temple area.

Happy with my choice, after asking how I looked, I took the free eye test, after being served a delightful cup of hot coffee after being offered tea or juice, which is provided to customers of this optical shop. Since I was wearing contacts, I had to remove these and wait for 10 minutes for my eyes to rest. The machine that was used was high tech and the optometrist was highly efficient, asking me to repeat a few of the letters. The choice of my eyeglasses grade was not just based on what provided me clearer vision but also that of the comfort level. If you have ever worn a pair of new eyeglasses that made your vision distorted or had the need to adjust, or those made you feel dizzy, then that was eliminated.

So while waiting for my eyeglasses, which was supposed to be in an hour, I decide to eat at a fast-food nearby. Half-way through my meal, I got a text that these were ready! Fast, I finished my food, and got my new eyeglasses.
As I left the mall, happy with the choice that I made to buy eyeglasses from Verona Optical and became even happier when I got compliments about my new eyeglasses look from family and friends who say that I look blooming.

Yellow Cab Man vs. Pizza: Baliwag, Bulacan

Rix Francisco ate an 18" pizza so fast, some of the other contestants were still on their first slice.
Yellow Cab Grand Opening
Baliwag Branch

Yellow Cab is one of the top international pizza chains in the Philippines. Their branch opening held last Feb. 12, 2016 was a great success. The staff was able to accommodate and make 100 of their 6" pepperoni and Hawaiian pizzas to give away to the first one hundred customers to line up. There was a very short waiting time from the signing up to get the free pizza until one was given.

Yellow Cab Baliwag is located in the front area of this town's SM, easily accessed from the parking area. It provides food delivery and the service vehicles are those familiar yellow Vespas. This branch has two access doors which are from the front of the mall and inside, right beside the Starbucks. There is outside seating near both doors.

The welcoming food was set, and it was the first time that I had tried the Charlie Chan pasta which is Thai-inspired and the craft pizza which was topped with smoked salmon and dill. That pizza is dreamy, and one a personal note, smoked salmon is one of my favorite food items. This craft pizza is only available for a limited time.
The Man vs. Pizza event stared at 5 pm. It was held in the activity area of the mall. The audience was enthusiastic and responsive - and the vibes showed that the interest in the contest was intent. The seats were all full and there were many who were watching while standing.

I participated in the first batch and was so excited as I has a whole 18" New York pizza to devour in 30 minutes. As soon as I started eating the pizza, I knew that it was going to be very difficult for me to eat that much - but I just kept going, bite after bite after bite. Then, there came that moment that is called "hitting the wall". I could feel the pizza filling up my stomach, and I had to slow down, taking smaller bites. I looked at the other contestants and saw that they were still going for it. The countdown to the last few minutes began, and that 2 minutes call seemed to be the longest minute of my life as I still would not give up. Well, in the end, I got 5th place out of five contestants and state that in the Yellow Cab Baliwag (Cindy) Man vs. Pizza contest, pizza won. It was a totally enjoyable experience as the pizza was so good.

The 2nd batch of participants for the Yellow Cab Man vs. Pizza event included the food challenge eating champion, Rix Francisco. It was amazing to watch him eat the pizza, standing up, with the jiggle move to make it go down, and he had rhythm, which was bite, bite, sip water.
The crowd surged nearer the stage. It became standing room only. The eating feat was fantastic, something that I have never seen before. The four other participants lagged behind, while there was one that was simply stunned, just staring at 'the man'. You may watch his final few bites in this Facebook video.

The Man vs Pizza event was fantastic.
I totally enjoyed the experience of participating and watching Rix Francisco.

Comparative Burger Review: Xander's Diner, Zark's and BBB

Move aside Zark's and Big Better Burgers: Xander's has awesome burgers!

Their burgers are one of the best I have ever tried with pure beef patties, just like what you would eat in the US. The bread is made in-house. The burgers are a stand-out, along with the other dishes such as the steak. The fries are the real thing, with skin on, and totally satisfied my "potato-fix" craving.

Comparative Burger Review: Zark's, Big Better Burgers, and Xander's

I have tried all 3 burgers, and even when it comes to the smallest burger of Xander's, the patty is larger and thicker than the others. Those other burgers have store-bought bread while this resto has the hamburger buns that is freshly-baked and has the creamy consistency without a lot of air pockets, and that perfect mound of browned crust. And, when it comes to texture, flavor, and what it is loaded with, Xander's is surely a lot better.
Xander's Diner is located at Las Pinas, along Alabang-Zapote road. It is in front of Star Mall, just beside the Petron gas station and the overhead walkway.
Affordable, one can get unli rice meals for the same price as popular fast food restaurants. The quality of the food is excellent and the quantity? You'll get more than what you paid for as the servings are hefty. Filling and fulfilling, when you want the best at affordable prices, Xander's Diner has the choices. There are unli rice meals at Xander's and they have this Honey BBQ fried chicken that will tell Bon Chon to move aside. And, this resto has an excellent steak, too!
Xander's has the ambiance of the typical American diner, with those cool couches and a milkshake bar. The area has a small coffee and cake shop, an outdoor dining and smoking area, a private function room for twenty people, and a large function room for parties and other events.
If you are going to the South, it is worth the trip. If you live in the South, it is a must-go to. The Xander's burger experience is unbeatable - and while you are at it, you might want to try the steak, too, but you surely won't be able to handle eating all in one trip - and you'll be doing what most of Xander's customers do - leave the place with a large smile, holding their take-home food. For those in the Las Pinas area, you'll be glad to know that Xander's Diner can be ordered through FoodPanda.

Learn more about what party packages and food promos of this great burger restaurant by liking the Xander's Diner Facebook page.

Mojo by Chord: Headphone Amp and DAC

STUDIO-GRADE SOUND QUALITY FOR SMARTPHONES AND CONNECTED DEVICES: JUST ADD MOJO!

Dec. 03, 2015: Chord Electronics, with their exclusive distributor Beyond Innovations, Inc, has launched Mojo, a British-built headphone amplifier and DAC that enables smartphones and connected devices to deliver recordingstudio sound quality from any headphone (Php 30,990).
Chord Electronics, a world leader in digital audio, has launched Mojo. A contraction of ‘Mobile Joy’, Mojo is a headphone amplifier and DAC (digital-to-analogue convertor) that empowers smartphones to deliver music content at up to studio-master-tape quality. Mojo enables this due to Chord’s advanced proprietary digital signal processing technology.
Low-cost, widely available apps, such as Onkyo’s HF player (iOS and Android), now make high-resolution music file playback easy from all smartphones. Mojo connects to these devices digitally, processing the files using the most advanced conversion technology available, to deliver genuinely unrivalled sound quality to up to two pairs of headphones.

Mojo is entirely designed and manufactured in England using British expertise. It distils 27 years of high-performance audio know-how into a single mass-market device designed to empower the smartphone. Mojo is the most advanced device of its kind in the world.

Get your Mojo workin’

Mojo connects digitally to smartphones and similar devices in a number of ways. It offers three different high-resolution digital inputs: Micro USB, optical and a 3.5mm coaxial input. Input selection is fully automatic: if more than one input is active, they are prioritized as USB first, coaxial second and optical third. A Micro USB to USB cable is supplied with each Mojo and Chord Electronics will be offering consumers a range of approved, low-cost connecting cables for iOS devices and various other digital connections.

Fast charging

Mojo utilises new high-temperature battery technology, giving much faster charging (up to twenty hours’ faster than competitor units). A full charge is reached in just four hours via USB, giving around ten hours’ playback; Mojo's charging Micro USB port has a battery status and charging indicator light, too.

Compact, portable, aircraft-grade aluminium

Mojo’s ultra-compact form, based on Chord’s award-winning Hugo platform, has been designed to be easily operated with no confusing or superfluous switches. Its simplicity means anyone can enjoy high-end sound quality straight out of the box. Mojo's casework is machined from solid aircraft-grade aluminium and has a hard, fine Matt-black finish that does not finger-mark.

High-resolution file playback

Mojo is capable of playing all of today’s music formats, including the very latest highresolution standards. It can deliver breath-taking realism from any digital music file: PCM; WAV; AAC; AIFF; MP3 and FLAC.

It is designed to work with all smartphones and music players and covers specialist high-resolution formats such as DoP DSD files: DSD 64; DSD 128 and DSD 256.

Mojo’s three high-resolution digital input options comprise optical (to 192kHz), plus Micro USB and RCA (mini-jack) which operate at up to an incredible 768kHz.

Proprietary technology

Mojo uses the new Artix-7 FPGA chipset from Silicon Valley’s Xilinx, making Mojo the most advanced DAC of its type on the planet! Unlike other audio products, that process digital files using crude off-the-shelf chips from Asia, Chord uses an FPGA — a programmable circuit that enables its skilled engineers to directly implement its own digital audio expertise, making Mojo unique in the marketplace.

Spherical coloured buttons

“Titus Pens iDoodle Battle of the Champions,” a grand on-the spot ballpen art
competition on Dec. 18 at the Music Hall of SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

On its third year, the Titus Pens iDoodle On-the-Spot Ballpen Art Contest brings “Battle of
the Champions,” an assembly of 75 regional champions from Bacolod, Pampanga, Cebu,
Manila, Dagupan, Iloilo, Davao, Bicol, Batangas, Cagayan de Oro, Bulacan, Cavite,
Baguio, La Union and Dumaguete. The year-long competitions helped spread the word of
“Visit the Philippines Year 2015,” the Department of Tourism’s campaign to attract both
domestic and international visitors.

“We are excited to be part of the doodling craze that promotes creativity and Philippine
tourism with ballpen art. Not only are we assembling the country’s rising artists under one
roof, we are also holding workshops on doodling in the areas of fashion, comics, food and
travel,” said Louie Gee Empeño, Titus Pens brand manager.
Empeño refers to side events “Titus OMG! Doodle4Fashion,” which will tackle fashion
illustration and let participants design their own shirts; “Titus Colors Doodle4Food,”
which will feature cupcake art and coffee cup doodle projects; “Titus Doodle4Travel,”
which will focus on urban sketching; and “Titus Gel Doodle4Hobby,” where comic book
artists will share how doodling helps them in creating fantastic superhero stories.

“Anyone can discover that art is not only limited with paintbrushes or canvases. People
can create masterpieces with a Titus pen on a piece of paper or even a coffee cup,” he
added.
Coinciding with the “Battle of the Champions” is “Titus iDoodle Pasko sa ‘Pinas On-theSpot

2015 Best Ramen in Manila by a Japanese Reviewer

Gaku Nakamura is a self-styled Japanese Ramen Consultant living in Manila. Last year, he listed his top 10 ramen with Ramen Nagi topping the list. But with a number of new and authentic restaurants popping up, here is some of Gaku-san’s top ramen for 2015!

#5 Mendokoro Ramenba

MUST TRY: Shoyu Tonkatsu

Gaku says: “Mendokoro has tonkotsu-based ramen with chashu. The restaurant looks just like a Japanese-style kitchen and it reminds me of a good ramen restaurant in Japan, Afuri. The taste of the broth and chasu is very nice.”

#4 Mitsuyado Seimen

MUST TRY: Cheese Tsukemen

Gaku says: “Tsukemen soup is yuzu flavor and the noodles are thick. I have never thought that cheese can fit wih Tsukemen, but you will be satisfied once you taste it at Mitsuyado!

#3 Ramen Daisho

MUST TRY: Miso Ramen

Gaku says: “The best Miso ramen in Manila! It is located along Shaw Blvd. Although not located in a major mall, lots of people go there just to eat Daisho's delicious ramen. Not only ramen, but their gyoza are also delicious.”

#2 Ramen Nagi

MUST TRY: Butao Ramen

Gaku says: “Nagi’s tonkotsu-based broth tastes like real Japanese tonkotsu. If you’re a first-time visitor, try Butao. When you've eaten half of it, try to add their Fire sauce to change the taste. You can also change the firmness of the ramen and the toppings based on your preference.”
